Let us remember those who have served

Memorial Day is an American holiday to acknowledge and celebrate our armed service members and veterans who have or are serving our country to protect the freedoms that we enjoy on a daily basis.

When sending a care package to loved ones overseas, our family likes to include letters and pictures.  DVDs are greatly appreciated as entertainment can be hard to come by when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere without Internet or telephone service. I have heard of families that send homemade movies reenacting popular films to loved ones and that they are a big hit.  Homemade cookies are also a treat.  I would not send chocolate as it can melt before reaching its destination.

For our veterans here at home there are all sorts of charities and organizations to get involved with.   Today we have parades and films and the president makes a speech which is nice and all but sometimes all you need is a to hear from a loved one.  So if you have a veteran or service member in your life make sure to let them know you care. There are also services to help those whom you don't know and would like to help.

This holiday does not have to be limited to American; If you know a serviceman or veteran in your own country make some time to acknowledge him or her.
