Read the Book

The Great Gatsby Novel

I know I read the story back in high school but I don't remember anything about it.

The story takes place during "the roaring 20s" in Long Island, New York in 1922.  To give you an idea of how long ago that was I will give you this example:  My great-grandmother was born in 1913 and if she were still alive today she would be 100 years old; She would have been 12 when this book was written.

American author F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the novel in 1925 and the story is thought by some to be semi-autobiographical as many of the people and places were based on those from his own life.  The Great Gatsby is considered to be one of the greatest literary masterpieces of the twentieth century.

There have been a few adaptations from page to screen over the years that have tried to capture the essence of the story and without great success.  It's always a hard thing to do so let's hope they get it right this time with the new movie.

louise brooks, silent film stars, 1920s
Louise Brooks

Dancer and silent film star Louise Brooks turned the bob into the hair style of the decade.  To achieve her look you can either cut your hair into a bob with a fringe or if you are like me and love your locks then just wear a wig. Use a straightening iron to get sleek shiny strands, the use a curling iron to curl the ends under.  Tip: you can use hot tools on wigs too!

One of Hollywood's first leading men, Valentino was also considered a style icon. To achieve his look wear your finest tailored suit and wristwatch then use your Dapper Dan Pomade; Get a good glob of it in your hand then use your fingers to slick it back through your hair.

Extra (sarcasm included):

If you are seeing the movie in 3D take a motion sickness pill about half an hour before entering the theater.

If you wear glasses, well, you probably are not going to see this in 3D unless you have contacts because fitting those awful 3D glasses over your glasses may or may not work.

If you plan on eating theater snacks during the movie, bring some antacids and/or pepto bismuth plus some hand wipes.

  1. I wear glasses and my theatre has plastic 3D glasses that fit over mine, I've never had trouble seeing all that 3D movies have to offer.
