Yearly Product Purge 2013

yearly beauty product edit purge, cleaning up out beauty products junk garbage

To further help you edit your beauty collection, I will show you what I purged from my own collection this year in order to give you a better picture of what needs to be done.

If you need help starting to edit your collection see the post: Edit your Beauty Collection.

Get ready for a super long, picture heavy post.

Let's start with Skin Care Products:

julep daylight defense, shiseido sunscreen, murad clay mask, murad essential-c c eye cream spf15, murad lighten & and brighten eye treatment

Julep Daylight Defense SPF30 for hands & face: This sunscreen is light on the face so it works well under makeup and it did not make me break out. There is no shelf life label on the tube so I would guess that because it is a sunscreen it should last about 12 months. Would I repurchase it? Yes

Shiseido Urban Environment UV Protection Cream SPF40 for face/body: This sunscreen is weightless on the face so you can use it under makeup, it does not make me break out, and it is water resistant to prevent perspiration on hot humid days. You do not get a lot of product for the price; I was able to use this about 4-5 times before it ran out. This is one of the best face sunscreens I have ever used but it is very hard to justify the price. This product does not have a shelf life label but it should last around 12 months. Repurchase? Maybe

Murad Acne Clarifying Mask: a clay based mask that uses sulfur as an active ingredient. It works well to help keep skin relatively clear. Shelf Life: 24 months. Repurchase? Yes

Mario Badescue Skin Care Silver Powder: this powder is used to clear pores from the nose in a similar manner to pore strips. Unfortunately it does not work as well as pore strips and it leaves a white stain behind that is hard to scrub off. Shelf Life: 6 months. Repurchase? No

Murad Essential-C Eye Cream SPF15 PA++: this product works to moisturize and protect the eye area, but it burns if you get it too close to the eyes (maybe because of the vitamin C?) Shelf Life: 24 months. Repurchase? No

Murad Lighten and Brighten Eye Treatment: uses hydroquinone to lighten dark circles in the undereye area. Expiration Date: 03/13 (lasted about 2 years.) Repurchase? Yes

Body Products:

cos bar for target blueberry white tea body lotion scrub, murad clarifying body spray, jergens natural glow & and protect daily moisturizer lotion, anti itchy anti-itchy eczemaway

Cos Bar for Target blueberry white tea body lotion: had a nice scent but it turned a bit funky after a year. No shelf life label but it should last between 1-2 years. Repurchase? No longer available

Cos Bar for Target blueberry white tea body scrub: gentle scrub with a nice scent. No shelf life label but it should last between 1-2 years. Repurchase? No longer available

Murad Clarifying Body Spray: uses active ingredient salicylic acid to treat and prevent body acne. This stuff seems to work but it stings so bad when I spray this on my back that I just could not continue to use it after a while. Shelf Life: 24 months. Repurchase? No

Jergens Natural Glow & Protect Daily Moisturizer SPF20 in Medium to Tan: The light version does nothing for my pasty white legs, but this version gives them some color. Not as effective as a full-on self-tanner but it works for everyday. It does have a strong smell and you have to watch it or you will end up with orange hands. I finally ran out just as summer ended. Expires: 11/13 (lasted about 2 years.) Repurchase? Yes

Anti-Itchy EczemAway: this is an all natural product I got at a natural foods store. I occasionally get little patches of eczema on my arms and legs and this stuff works to get rid of it fast but it burns really badly while doing it. Shelf Life: maybe 1 year. Repurchase? No

Hair Products:

Alterna Bamboo Color Hold+ Travel Kit

Alterna Bamboo Color Hold+ Travel Kit: I purchased this kit a little over a year ago and the shelf life is 12 months, but it is almost gone so I am just going to use it up anyway. Repurchase? Yes

Foundations:

murad sheer tint, revlon colorstay makeup for combination oily combination/oily skin, lorac natural performance foundation, maybelline dream nude airfoam foundation, maybelline dream fresh bb cream skin perfector

Murad Oil-Free Sunblock SPF15 Sheer Tint: This tinted moisturizer somehow chemically matches your skin color and does not make me break out.  Shelf Life: 24 months. Repurchase? No longer available

Revlon Colorstay Makeup for Combination/Oily Skin(150 Buff & 180 Sand Beige): great full coverage foundation for acne prone skin.  My skin tone is somewhere between the two shades so I use the lighter shade in the center of my face and I use the darker shade to contour.  Shelf Life: 24 months.  Repurchase? Yes

Lorac Natural Performance Foundation (NP1): nice light to medium coverage foundation that works well for acne prone skin.  This shade was always too light for me even during the winter, so it might work well for very fair skin tones.  Shelf Life: 6 months.  Repurchase? Yes, but diff. shade

Maybelline Dream Nude Airfoam SPF16 foundation (110 Porcelain Ivory): light coverage foundation for a no-makeup look.  I was never really that taken with this product mostly because the foam is a bit difficult to blend with anything besides your hands. Shelf Life: 24 months (Exp. 12/13.) Repurchase? No

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream SPF30 (light/medium): This is hands down my favorite BB cream because it matches my skin tone perfectly.  There is no shelf life label but this product should have a shelf life of at least 1 year.  Repurchase? Yes

Primers & Concealers:

stila one step primecolor, benefit realness of concealness mini fake it fake-it kit, lorac aquaprime, lorac behind the scenes eye primer, urban decay eyeshadow primer potion, nyx pore filler, stila cover up stick, maybelline dream lumi touch highlighting concealer, l'oreal paris studio secrets magic perfecting base face primer

Lorac aquaPrime: wonderful primer for sensitive, oily, acne prone skin.  Shelf Life: 12 months  Repurchase? Yes

NYX Pore Filler: did not work for me at all; no visible difference in my skin after application and not really moisturizing either. Shelf Life: 12 months. Repurchase? No

L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base Face Primer: works well for a drugstore primer. No shelf life label, but a product like this should last at least 1 year. Repurchase? Yes

Benefit Realness of Concealness mini "fake-it" kit: This kit includes: Lip Plump lip primer, High Beam highlighter, Ooh la Lift under-eye "de-puffer", Lemon Aid color correcting eyelid primer, and Boi-ing concealer. I think I used this once or twice; good for travel. Shelf Life: 6-12 months. Repurchase? Maybe some of the items separately but not the whole kit

Stila Cover Up Stick concealer (01): nice and creamy, this is good for covering acne spots but not the undereye area. Shelf Life: 12 months. Repurchase? No longer available

Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer (Ivory & Nude): This is my go to concealer and it is a dupe for YSL Touche Eclat. In winter I use Ivory and in summer I use Nude. There is no shelf life label on this product, but it should last 6 months to 1 year. Repurchase? Yes

Lorac Behind the Scenes Eye Primer: nice, soft, and works very well; one of my favorites. There is no shelf life label, but this type of product should last 6 months to 1 year. Repurchase? Yes

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Eyeshadow Base (original version): nice, soft, and works very well; one of my favorites. There is no shelf life label, but this type of product should last 6 months to 1 year. Repurchase? Yes

Stila One Step Primecolor (cool colors): Includes: Kitten, a champagne pink; Pop of Pink a light nude pink; Capri Coral a medium coral.  Kitten is too light as an eyeshadow for me;  It just looks like sheen on my lids so at least it helps me look more awake.  Capri Coral makes me look like I have raw or seriously irritated eyelids.  I like Pop of Pink which gives me a hint of color on the lids and used it the most of the three;  It is a quick one step eye color for lazy days.  Shelf Life: 6 months.  Repurchase? No longer available

Blush & Bronzer:

clinique true bronze pressed powder bronzer, maybelline dream bouncy blush, benefit posie tint lip and cheek stain

Clinique True Bronze Pressed Powder Bronzer (02 Sunkissed): medium bronzer with shimmer. I love the mirror in this compact and use it for doing my makeup on the go. There is no shelf life label, but this type of product should last 1-2 years. Repurchase? Yes

Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush (15 Rose Petal, 30 Candy Coral, 40 Pink Plum): these are very sheer and do not deposit enough color for my liking. They are hard to apply and blend. These do not have shelf life labels, but this type of product should last 6 months to 1 year. Repurchase? No

Love & Beauty cream cheek blush (pink): for $1 at Forever 21, this is an amazing cream blush. It looks scary when applying because it applies looking like the color in the pan but it melts/sheers out into a nice natural pink flush. There is no shelf life label, but this type of product should last 6 months to 1 year. Repurchase? Yes

Benefit Posie Tint Lip & Cheek Stain: a like the color but I don't like the application; You apply it with a nail polish style brush and it stains my fingers.  It does not really show up on my lips so I don't use it as a lip tint.  Shelf Life: 12 months. Repurchase? Maybe

Mascara, Eye Liners, & Brows:

Benefit BADgal Plum mascara: this product is supposed to make eyes appear brighter and whiter because of the plum color. I did not notice any difference between this and a brown mascara. Shelf Life: 6 months. Repurchase? No

Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara (01 Black): this is one of my favorite mascara and I have been using it for years. No label on the product, but a product like this should last 3-6 months. Repurchase? Yes

Lorac Special Effects primer & mascara (Black Pearl): The primer helps to extend my lashes way out and the shiny black mascara makes it pretty. The brushes are a little bit prickly. No shelf life label, but a product like this should last 3-6 months. Repurchase? Yes

Lorac Multiplex 3D Lashes (Black): the curved wand gives lots of volume. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? Yes

Julep Boho Glam Lengthening Mascara (Espresso Brown): I like this mascara for natural everyday looks, but the brush is too poky and sharp.  No label, shelf life 3-6 months.  Repurchase? No

Clinique High Impact Mascara (01 Black): nice black mascara, but it flakes a little bit. Shelf Life: 6 months. Repurchase? No

BareMinerals Flawless Definition & Flawless Definition Volumizing (Black): I like these for everyday because they are gentle on my lashes and don't contribute to tired eyes. I need volume in my mascara so I don't need both. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? the second one

Stila Stay all Day Waterproof Volumizing Mascara (black): this mascara is great for a long night of partying. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? Yes

Benefit BADgal eye pencil (black): this thick black eyeliner helps you create a sexy smokey eye. No label, shelf life 6-12 months. Repurchase? Maybe

Benefit Eye Bright: the pink helps counteract the blue in dark circles. No label, shelf life 6-12 months. Repurchase? Maybe

Chella Skin Care Eyebrow Defining Gel: a clear gel to help tame wayward brows without the crunchy feeling. Shelf Life: 12 months. Repurchase? Yes

Lipstick, Lip Gloss, Lip Stains:

clinique different lipstick, sonia kashuk lipstick, revlon just bitten lipstain & and balm, josie maran plumping lip gloss, the all natural face vegan lip gloss, revlon super lustrous lip gloss, bath & and body works lip gloss, benefit double ended double-ended lip gloss, fantasy makers magic gloss

Clinique Different Lipstick (Spiced Apple): this is a nice sheer "warm cinnamon red" that is moisturizing and perfect for fall. Unfortunately, this one is overdue for the purge pile. No label, shelf life for this type of product should be 6 months-1 year. Repurchase? Yes

Sonia Kashuk Satin Luxe Lip Color SPF16 (Vivid Coral): I liked the bright coral color for spring and summer but I could not get over the formula; It applies streaky and is so slick that it picks up when you talk giving you "goop mouth." No label, shelf life 6 mos.-1 year. Repurchase? No

Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain & Balm (Twilight): you can't guess the actual color by looking at the packaging on these. I thought this was a berry color but it is much darker, like a wine stain. However, I do like the color as a statement lip or for an elegant evening out. Just make sure your lips are in perfect condition because this shows every flaw. The balm helps keep this from being too drying. No label, shelf life 6 mos.-1 year. Repurchase? Maybe

Josie Maran Plumping Lip Gloss (Brilliance): this pretty pink gloss is one of my favorites and one of the first all natural products I had ever used. I have been using it for years. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? Yes

The All Natural Face Vegan Lip Gloss (Peppermint Stick): pink, moisturizing, and minty. Unfortunately, it does not last on the lips. I found myself needing to reapply every 30 min. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? No

Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss (Peach Petal): this light peach gloss is very sheer and goopy. The coverage is not consistent because some days it goes on fine and others it is clumpy and goopy. No label, shelf life 6 mos.-1 year. Repurchase? No

Bath & Body Works Liplicious Lip Gloss (Grape Jelly Bean): a pretty pinky purple gloss that smells like a grape jelly bean. No label, shelf life 6 mos.-1 year. Repurchase? Yes

Bath & Body Works Liplicious Lip Gloss (Plump Glass): a clear plumping gloss that does not burn. No label, shelf life 6 mos.-1 year. Repurchase? Yes

Benefit double-ended lip gloss (Zone Out & Friends in High Places): "zone out" is a sheer natural gold color and "friends in high places" is a sheer mauve pink. No label, shelf life 6 mos. - 1 year. Repurchase? No longer available

Fantasy Makers Magic Gloss Self Adjusting Lip Gloss (Just Bitten): this did not work for me. No label, shelf life 6 mos. - 1 year. Repurchase? No

The other double ended lip gloss is something I purchased while in South Korea, so I have no idea what brand it is. It has been one of my favorite lip glosses for years. It is a pretty pale pink on one side and a sheer bright coral red on the other. Unfortunately, it is way past time to let it go. If anyone knows what brand this is I would love to know so that I can try to get another one (I think it says VoV Aura? Two Lips)

Lip Balms:

eos smooth sphere, burt's bees ultra conditioning lip balm, chapstick medicated, beelux chocolat lip balm, organic indulgence lip butter, julep daylight defense lip balm, burt's bees tinted lip balm, honeylicious honey blueberry lip balm, good fortune smile lip balm, pacifica color quench lip tint, murad energizing pomegranate lip protector

EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm (Sweet Mint): one of may favorites and it lasts for a long time. The minty flavor helps with "coffee breath." No shelf life label, but a product like this should last 6 months to 1 year. Repurchase? Yes

Burt's Bees Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm: good for when lips need some extra care. Alternative to Chapstick Medicated. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? Yes

Chapstick Medicated: I have used this for years for problem chapped lips, but recently I have been trying to cut out petroleum so I switched to a more natural product. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? No

Beeluxe Lip Balm (Chocolat): all natural chocolate flavored lip balm with real chocolate in it. What's better than that? No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? Yes

Organic Indulgence Lip Butter (chocolate mint): organic moisturizing lip butter. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? Yes

Julep Daylight Defense SPF15 Lip Balm (Vanilla Mint): a great lip balm for outings because it has SPF. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? Yes

Promotional Samsung Galaxy SIII SPF 15 Lip Balm: this was a really nice lip balm for an event freebie. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? Not available

Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm (Tiger Lily): I never really cared for the color of this one on myself, it just does not look right, and it dried out fast and became chalky during application. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? No

Honeylicious Lip Balm (Honey Blueberry): candy flavored all natural lip balm which is a dangerous combo because you just want to lick your lips once applied. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? No - but only because of the licking (I can't handle sugary products)

Good Fortune Smile Natural Lip Balm (Orange+Vanilla): this has got to be, hands down, the best lip balm I have ever used. It is all natural, exfoliates the lips, is super moisturizing, and lasts for hours. If I could only have one lip balm this would be it. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? Definitely

Pacifica Natural Color Quench Lip Tint (Guava Berry): This mauve tinted lip balm lasts for a long time and was my daily go-to. It gets a bit chalky when not used, but once you warm it up with your lips it smooths on nicely. No label, shelf life 3-6 months. Repurchase? Yes

Murad Energizing Pomegranate Lip Protector SPF15: Even though it has SPF it is not very moisturizing; You have to use several layers to feel moisturized and it does not last. Shelf Life: 24 months. Repurchase? No

Hands & Nails:

burt's bees naturally ageless hand cream, sally hansen continuous treatment base & and top coat, sally hansen no more mistakes manicure clean-up pen

Burt's Bees Naturally Ageless Hand Cream: This is a great hand cream. No label, but a product like this should last 12-24 months. Repurchase? Yes

Sally Hansen Continuous Treatment Base & Top Coat: a great two in one product that I have used for years. Shelf Life: 24 months. Repurchase? Yes

Sally Hansen No More Mistakes Manicure Clean-Up Pen: I bought this to clean up my cuticles but it doesn't work at all for me. Shelf Life: 24 months. Repurchase? No

Sentimentals: There comes a time when we have to ask ourselves, do I need to keep this? Will I ever use it? Why am I hanging on to this? If it isn't something that has some REAL sentimental value, like photos or a family heirloom, it's time to let it go.

benefit kitten sparkling powder in a puff, benefit kitten in paris sparkling powder in a puff

I have had the Benefit Kitten (gold shimmer powder) and Kitten Goes to Paris (silver shimmer powder) Sparkling Powder in a Puff products since my high school senior prom. That was a loooooong time ago. I always thought I might use them again, but I never have. The boxes and the powder puffs are so pretty and cute that I kept them just to look at, but it's time to be real and ask myself: Do I really need things on my vanity that are cute but have no use and take up space? No. It's hard to let them go, but it's time.

benefit bathina body so fine velvet body balm, flaunt beauty oh so jolie body mist

I got this Benefit Bathina Body So Fine Velvet Body Balm at the same time as the Kittens. I am thinking of maybe auctioning the empty packaging for these items on eBay; Some people like vintage packaging.

I received the Flaunt Beauty Oh so Jolie Body Mist as a free gift with purchase at Icing back in like 2008 or 2009. It is a body mist with gold glitter in it. I never cared for the scent but I liked the packaging so I kept it for looks.

I received this pink zebra lip gloss set for Christmas years ago. It came with six glittery lip glosses and a dark pink lip liner. The lip liner and the darkest pink lip gloss actually look good together but I always forgot about this set and never used it much. While I like the zebra case, it does not fit any of my other lip glosses so it's time for it to go.

So that's it for my yearly purge. All products were safely cleaned and disposed of or recycled.  I hope this helps you with organizing and purging things from your own stash.  I might do another purge post around Christmas.

Comments

  1. Oh man seeing this makes me remember I got sooo much "stuff" hanging around. I do enjoy seeing your purge collection and how you sorted into repurchase or not. I should start with my shampoos. I use one for a few weeks and usually get bored and move to a different one before it's finished, but don't throw it away.

  2. I used to do that too but I have been trying to stay more organized this past year
